How long does a kitchen remodel take? There is no honest single number, because three things set it: whether the layout changes, the inspections your city requires, and whether every cabinet, counter and fixture is on site before demolition. A Google review of a kitchen with a wall removed says it was remodeled “in 2.5 weeks”; that is one project, not a promise. Every kitchen runs in two stretches: planning (design, selections, pricing, permits and ordering) and construction (demolition through the final walkthrough). How long your kitchen is out of service depends on those same three things.

Schedule trouble often starts before anyone swings a hammer: a selection that was not made, or a cabinet order placed after the old kitchen came out. Below is the kitchen remodel timeline phase by phase, what stretches each phase, and how to plan for the stretch without a working kitchen. To build a schedule for your own kitchen, [talk with our team](https://ggsremodelingtx.com/contact/).

## The two timelines: planning and construction

The planning stretch is flexible and happens while your kitchen still works. It covers the consultation and measurements, the layout, every selection, a line-item price, permits where the scope needs them, and ordering. Its length depends mostly on how quickly decisions get made and how long the chosen products take to arrive.

The construction stretch is the one you live through. It is shortest when nothing is waiting on a decision or a delivery, which is why the order of events matters more than the speed of the crew.

## Kitchen remodel timeline, phase by phase

Phase

What happens

What can stretch it

1\. Consultation and design

Goals, measurements, layout drawings

Undecided layout, walls you are unsure about removing

2\. Selections and pricing

Cabinets, counters, tile, sinks, faucets, lighting, appliances; a priced scope

Choices left open, comparing many options

3\. Ordering and permits

Products ordered, permit applications filed where needed

Long product lead times, city plan review

4\. Demolition

Old cabinets, counters and finishes removed; dust protection set up

Hidden water damage or wiring found behind the walls

5\. Rough-in and inspections

Plumbing, gas, electrical and vent work inside open walls

Layout changes, inspection scheduling

6\. Walls, cabinets, countertops

Drywall repair, cabinets set, stone templated on the installed cabinets, then fabricated and installed

The gap between countertop templating and installation

7\. Finishes and walkthrough

Backsplash, appliances, fixtures, lighting, touch-ups, final walkthrough

Missing or damaged items, a long punch list

Phase 6 has a built-in wait: stone countertops are measured from the cabinets once they are installed, so counters cannot be cut until cabinets are in. A good schedule plans other work, such as lighting or flooring touch-ups, into that gap.

## What makes a kitchen remodel take longer

- **Changing the layout.** Moving a sink, range or wall adds plumbing, gas, electrical or structural work and often a permit with inspections.
- **Inspection scheduling.** Rough-in inspections must pass before walls close. Each city sets its own process; in Dallas, according to the City of Dallas building inspection page (read 2026-10-09), since June 1, 2026 plumbing and mechanical rough inspections have to be booked together for one inspection day, and their final inspections together as well.
- **Late selections.** A faucet or tile picked after demolition can hold the whole room for its delivery.
- **Custom pieces.** Custom cabinets are built after the order, and natural stone may be chosen slab by slab.
- **Hidden conditions.** Water damage, old wiring or a soft subfloor get repaired before anything new goes in.
- **Mid-project changes.** Every change after demolition can mean a new order, a new price and a trade coming back.

## Living without a kitchen while it is remodeled

Set up a temporary kitchen before demolition: the refrigerator, a microwave, a coffee maker and an electric cooktop or slow cooker in a room near a sink, such as a laundry room or wet bar. Stock paper plates and plan simple meals for the first stretch. Agree with your contractor on which entrance the crew uses, where materials are stored, and how dust is kept out of the rest of the house and the HVAC returns.

Try not to schedule the construction stretch across a holiday you are hosting or a family event; the schedule should work around your calendar, not the other way around.

## How to keep your kitchen remodel on schedule

1. **Make every selection before demolition,** down to the cabinet hardware and the light over the sink.
2. **Approve the drawings in writing** so the cabinet order and the electrical layout match.
3. **Confirm deliveries are on site** before the old kitchen comes out.
4. **Ask for the countertop template and install dates** as soon as cabinets are scheduled.
5. **Be reachable for quick decisions** during demolition and rough-in, when hidden conditions show up.
6. **Hold changes to a minimum** once construction starts, and get any change priced before it is built.

## Questions homeowners ask about the kitchen remodel timeline

### Does the timeline differ between Dallas, Fort Worth and the suburbs?

The phases are the same anywhere in the area. What differs from city to city is whether your scope needs a permit, how long plan review takes, and how inspections are booked, so ask whoever builds your kitchen how your city’s process fits into the schedule.

### Can I stay in my house during a kitchen remodel?

Usually, yes. Plan for noise and dust during working hours and for the water or power to be off for short stretches during rough-in.

### When should I order appliances?

During the selections phase, before demolition. Cabinets are built and set around appliance sizes, so the exact models should be known before the cabinet order goes in.

## Plan the schedule with the scope

The timeline holds when the decisions behind it are made first.
