Allen permits

Allen's new 2024 building codes and how permits work

Allen's City Council approved the 2024 International codes on July 28, 2026, and they took effect on September 26, 2026. Every permit application received on or after that date is reviewed under the new codes (Allen's adopted-codes page lists the 2023 National Electrical Code with them), so a remodel drawn earlier in the year under the old codes may need its plans updated before it is submitted.

All permit applications go through Allen's Citizen Self-Service (CSS) portal. Homeowners doing their own work file a Homeowner's Affidavit first. If you hire a contractor, the city's advice is to make sure the contractor has applied for and received the permit before work starts; inspections are required either way.

Allen also publishes its amended list of work exempt from permits (IRC section R105.2). For a remodel the list is narrow; the items that matter most in a kitchen or bath are beside this text.

  • Windows and doors replaced in the same opening, egress kept: no permit
  • Pulling and resetting a toilet with no pipe or valve changes: no permit
  • Replacing a concealed drain, waste or vent pipe counts as new work: permit
  • Sheds up to 120 square feet or 8 feet tall: no permit

Allen homes

Allen houses by the numbers

The Census Bureau's estimates put the median Allen home at 2002. A third of homes were built in the 2000s, a quarter in the 1990s and a quarter in 2010 or later; only about one in six is older than 1990. Seven in ten are lived in by their owners.

That age profile shapes the plan. In a 1990s house the kitchen and baths are usually the oldest rooms, so they lead the list; in a house from the 2010s the question is more often how to add or repurpose space, such as an office, a primary suite or a converted garage. Our full-home remodeling cost guide shows what moves the budget when several rooms change at once.

The project involved remodeling our bathroom and part of the hallway. The team worked efficiently and kept disruptions to a minimum. They were organized and made sure materials were handled properly. The final look is clean and updated, exactly what we were hoping for.

Bathroom and hallway remodel · May 2026

We had Eilon and his team remodel our master bath. New shower, tub, vanity, tiled floors, etc. This project took over three weeks but we are very happy with the result! Eilon checked in on the progress three or four times a week and a special thank you to Avilla who did the majority of the labor as well as Stav for her design expertise.

After speaking with several remodeling companies and contractors, we chose Global Green Solutions and they did not disappoint. Ari and his team took my vision and made it even better than I could have imagined. They removed a wall and completely remodeled my kitchen in 2.5 weeks. Their professionalism was a 10. Their work and craftsmanship was a 10.5! I would highly recommend and will use them for future projects moving forward!
